Learning Independence Through the TRAIL Academy

The TRAIL Academy is an 18-month, time-limited program designed to empower individuals with developmental disabilities to live independently and build meaningful social connections. Participants begin with full 24‑hour support, which gradually decreases as they learn and grow self‑confidence. Throughout the journey, learners gain essential daily living skills such as cooking, cleaning, medication and health management, budgeting, emergency preparedness, technology use, and navigating public transportation. The program is funded by Lancaster County BHDS and is tailored to each person’s pace, ensuring a safe and motivating environment. Graduates graduate with stronger self‑reliance, practical resource knowledge, and improved community engagement—gaining tools that enable sustained independence and long‑term success.

Our Approach to Care

We empower individuals to reach independence by gradually building skills, confidence, and community connection through personalized and supportive experiences.

  • Gradual Support Transition: Start with full-time assistance and taper to independence as skills and confidence grow.
  • Skill‑Focused Learning: Build everyday independence through hands-on training in budgeting, home skills, technology, and safety.
  • Community Engagement: Promote meaningful involvement through practical experiences and access to local resources.
