Therapeutic and educational services for children with developmental needs

One of the most exciting aspects of being a parent is watching your child grow and develop. However, sometimes your child could use some extra help reaching milestones. At Excentia Human Services, we want to help all children reach their full potential with our early intervention programs. We offer many services to help build on the natural learning opportunities your child may experience throughout the day to establish a strong foundation for lifelong success.

Our programs for young children with developmental disabilities help children, from birth to five, who are experiencing developmental delays or disabilities.

While we don’t believe that growth and development occurs on a strict timetable, we do strive to provide our parents and caregivers with a proactive approach to ensure that their children are put on a healthy path of development.

We have a collaborative approach and we work with the individuals involved in a child’s life that could enhance a child’s development, such as the family, caregivers, teachers, other support providers and members of the community.

About Our Early Childhood Intervention Services

At Excentia Human Services, we understand that no two children are alike. We offer personalized early childhood intervention programs based on each child’s current strengths and needs.

Some of the services we offer include:

  • Occupational therapy: Our occupational therapy services help children gain the skills to complete tasks such as eating, putting on shoes or playing with other children.
  • Speech therapy: Speech-language pathologists can help your child learn to communicate their needs and wants with others. They can also work on nonverbal aspects of speech, such as feeding or body language.
  • Behavioral therapy: Undergoing behavioral therapy services helps to strengthen positive behaviors while eliminating or reducing negative behaviors.
Infant & Toddler Program

We provide our programs for young children with developmental delays in environments that are part of a child’s daily routine, such as the home or day care. We address a variety of skill areas including physical, social, communication, cognitive, and adaptive. Depending on the need, a child may work with one or a combination of occupational, physical, or speech therapists, or a special instructor.

Our preschools are inclusive environments where children of all abilities learn and play together. Children with an individualized education plan who attend our preschool classrooms may receive specialized instruction, physical, occupational, and speech therapies specific to each child’s program needs. These therapy services are integrated into each preschool location.

Benefits of Our Early Childhood Intervention Services

The first few years of a child’s life are critical for laying a solid foundation for cognitive, behavioral and social skills in childhood and beyond. With the help of our early childhood intervention services, your child will experience benefits such as:

  • Learning through play: Purposeful play can help facilitate the development of skills, problem solving, socialization and communication.
  • Incorporating lessons into daily routines: Our therapists will meet with your child in a familiar environment to ensure lessons and strategies become a part of their daily routine.
  • Reaching their full potential: Early intervention services help your child meet developmental milestones while building their confidence and giving them the tools for long-lasting success.

Early Childhood Contact Form

Dr. S. June Smith was a psychologist who gave many years of dedicated and innovative service to individuals with special needs in Lancaster County.  Thanks to her hard work and persistence, many great programs are available throughout Lancaster County today.

In 1965, Dr. June helped establish preschool programs for children with special needs, which included an organization formerly known as the S. June Smith Center, which became part of Excentia in 2013.

Today, Excentia Human Services continues to honor her legacy by providing early intervention services to children. Dr. June retired in 1971 after 30 years as director of special pupil services for the former Lancaster County Public Schools, now the Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13.

She passed away on April 25, 2001 at the age of 95.

This year my son has some spontaneous speech and is in kindergarten! I got to hear him say “love you!” We wouldn’t be where we are now without the solid base we got from Excentia Human Services. We are forever grateful.
